Lettuce is the most popular salad plant, valued as much for its leaves as the blanched heart. Lettuce are classified in several ways. There are two main divisions between the cabbage (crisphead or butterhead) types and cos: they may be classified further as summer and winter varieties, and those suitable for frame or greenhouse cultivation.
