Allotment Gardening - February Digging
Garden spaces for vegetables are managed so much more easily with raised beds. Gone is the problem of being faced with digging a large plot in early spring, mud clinging to boots and not knowing where to start. A series of raised beds and all weather paths make the beds accessible at all times of the year, and they are easy to deal with and keep tidy.
Winter digging can be done during February but there is no point in sowing seed or planting in cold wet soil, it will only rot, far better to wait until the soil has warmed up a little. Cloches can be used to speed up this process. Keep digging over the vegetable plot when the weather allows incorporating well rotted manure, leaf mould or compost.
