Rhode Island Red7 of the Best American Chicken Breeds

American chicken breeds include:

  1. Araucana
The Araucana is a chicken breed that combines the unusual traits of tufts, blue coloured eggs and sometimes rumplessness (no tail feathers). The Araucana is a hybrid of two South American breeds: the Collonca (a naturally blue-egg laying, rumpless, clean-faced chicken) and the Quetro (a pinkish-brown egg layer that is tailed and has ear-tufts).
  2. Delaware
The Delaware is a breed of chicken originating in the U.S. state of Delaware. The Delaware is extremely scarce in the UK. The Delaware is a medium sized breed. They have rather large, bright red coloured single combs and wattles.
  3. Jersey Giant
The Jersey Giant is a calm and docile bird. Named for their U.S. state of origin (New Jersey) and their large size. Jersey Giants are the largest purebred chicken breed. Cocks average 13 lbs. and hens 11 lbs.
  4. New Hampshire Red
The New Hampsire Red breed is a traditional looking bird with a good temperament. The New Hampshire breed of chicken originated in the U.S. state of New Hampshire. New Hampshires represent a specialized selection out of the Rhode Island Red breed. By intensive selection for rapid growth, fast feathering, early maturity and vigor, a different breed gradually emerged.
  5. Plymouth Rock
The Plymouth Rock is a popular dual purpose breed which was developed in Massachusetts during the 1820s. Plymouth Rocks are large, long-lived chickens. Some varieties are good layers while others are bred principally for meat. They possess a long, broad back; a moderately deep, full breast; and yellow skin and legs.
  6. Rhode Island Red
The Rhode Island Reds are very good layers of brown eggs and can produce approximately 230 eggs per year. Rhode Island Reds are tough birds, resistant to illness, good at foraging and free ranging, and typically docile, quiet, and friendly.
  7. Wyandotte
Wyandottes are a docile, dual-purpose breed kept for their brown eggs and for meat. They appear in a wide variety of colour patterns, and are popular show birds. The Wyandotte is a medium sized bird with a rose comb and clean legs.
