Robert Paton built the small lighthouse in 1841, which is still to be found at Ayr harbour. The northern side is used for freight traffic.
Ships such as the Waverley use the southern side of the harbour. Carrick Quay is an exclusive development of luxury apartments on the southern side of the harbour.
